Regents' Primary students travel to Nepal
During the Primary Round Square Week, 10 students from Year 5 and 6 travelled to Nepal to take part in a service trip with our international community partner, the Sanjivani Primary School.

During the Primary Round Square Week, 10 students from Year 5 and 6 travelled to Nepal to take part in a service trip with our international community partner, the Sanjivani Primary School.

Braving the cold, lack of electricity and lack of transport high in the Himalayas, our adventurous team carried resources to the little mountain school and led team games and mini lessons for the students there. Below is what they had to say about their experiences:

Ricky: “At the Farmhouse the mountain guides were really keen and friendly. They all had different personalities so we all had a different favourite. The view from the guesthouse was awesome! Oh, and the food was a choice of local and international. There was plenty to eat!”

John:  “Every day we walked down the mountain. It was half an hour trip down to the Learning Centre and more than an hour to the Sanjivani Primary School. It became hotter as we progressed down the mountain so we took layers off which we had to carry. Climbing back up the mountain was a hard workout!”

Channoh:  “One day we joined the normal classes which the children were learning every day and I learned how to say the numbers 1 to 10 in Nepali. It was hard memorising all of it. The things that the children were learning were way different than what I learn Regents.”

Christoph: “It was very hard to understand the children in Nepal as they could only speak a little English. Luckily, our very helpful guides were translating for us so we could understand what they were saying. We learned a few Nepali words too which was fun! Namaste!”

Tim: “It was really difficult to communicate with the Nepali children and teach them as they couldn’t understand and did different things than what I wanted. I know what our teachers feel like now!”

Guitar: “In Nepal we didn’t just teach the children new things, we brought lots of resources as well and also donated $850 for some classroom furniture. The teachers bought cupboards for putting the resources in that we brought with us.”

Maya: “The Year 3 classroom was in need of some TLC. After quick delivery of paint from the valley below, we got to work. It was my first time and I enjoyed painting with a roller. Fresh paint made a huge difference and put big smiles on children’s faces. It felt good seeing everyone happy.”

Rebecca: “On the return to Kathmandu, we stopped at Bhaktapur and saw lots of temples. Later in the evening we went to a restaurant overlooking the amazing Boudhanath temple. We shared an enormous Caesar Salad and a pizza then for desert I had a Chocolate Mousse and a Sizzling Hot Brownie. It was really fun!”
