Challenge; an Everyday Word in Early Years

Children thrive in an environment where learning is challenging and where mistakes are learning opportunities.

  • thinking

They are observed supporting each other, developing the confidence to keep on trying, and knowing that it’s ok to make mistakes. As teachers respond to children’s completed challenges, the pride of self-accomplishment is clearly evident. The motivation of our students working in such an environment is inspiring.

This week I have observed PN children creating an obstacle course for themselves and challenging each other to complete it; great fun was had by all! In Nursery some children have been challenging themselves with phonics games at lunchtime; is there any difference between learning and playing? Lunchtimes seem a great opportunity for children to develop their own challenges and resolve them; last week I watched a group of boys work together to work out how to become ‘human wheelbarrows’ then race each other across the playground – yes, I was very tempted to join in!

‘The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it. Molière
