During the afternoon we visited the cemetery for fallen soldiers, reading messages on plaques and calculating how old the men were when they died. We were then lead around the museum, further depending our understanding of the Burma-Thailand Railway.
On Wednesday, we journeyed to the infamous Hellfire Pass, Year 6 once again showing great respect by asking appropriate questions and composing heartfelt poetry. We then ventured slowly through the informative Hellfire Pass Museum, exploring artefacts and learning more about Asia’s involvement in WW2.
Before saying goodbye to our barge staff friends and returning to school on Thursday, Year 6 participated in some fun team building games and reflected upon all that they had experienced during the trip. Our trip was a balance between good fun and sensitive reflection. Learning experiences of the Death Railway have impacted the children both educationally and emotionally.
In the words of one of the year 6 students on the trip:
‘It was incredible to think what actually happened in WW2, we couldn’t believe it. It was an amazing trip, one that we certainly won’t forget.’
