"On Monday afternoons," writes Year 12 student MinJi, "Gino and I have been supervising the Lego Mindstorms activity, where younger students at Regents International School Pattaya build robots using Lego."
The students attending this activity split into two groups in the very first week and each had the same Lego pack to work with. I supervised one group and Gino supervised the other. For the first few weeks, both teams tried building the same robot and it was more like a competition to see which team could finish first. When the robots were completed, the students tested out them using the remote controls.
In the following weeks, we disassembled the robots and chose others to build, which were more complex and more difficult to construct.
The ‘Lego Mindstorms’ afterschool activity is a fantastic one for students as it develops their team-working skills and gives them a foundation of engineering skills. At the same time, the activity is fun! Gino and I thoroughly enjoyed working with the other students and I would encourage as many students to sign up for this activity as possible in the future…
