Time for a Wonder?

  • Sarah_Osbourne_James

Daydreaming has often had negative connotations. How many times do we hear; Oh he/she is real daydreamer! Spends all his/her time looking out of the window! If only he/she would concentrate more? Are you listening? Where have you gone?

Maybe we could try to capture the moment instead? Or just give some space and time for our children to wonder and think. I personally believe that we need to nurture our children’s appetite for curiosity, to question the world around them, inspire their inquisitiveness and we can do this by facilitating wonder and being less prescriptive.

If your child is staring into space, give them time to daydream, give them time to process, let them get lost in themselves for a while. Encourage curiosity and wonder! Ask questions and question answers.  Avoid closed questions that require a one word answer and try to practice open ended questions;

  • What would happen if …
  • What would it be like to …
  • Why did …
  • How do we know that …
  • What did you think when …
  • Why do you think that…

If our children find beauty and wonder in the world around them it can lead to motivation, discovery and curiosity. Discovery, motivation and curiosity are the foundations for artistic, scientific and linguistic breakthroughs. We can acquire knowledge easily. Curiosity has to be nurtured and does not just happen!
