Music at Regents

Music holds an important place at Regents and is a key part of the curriculum from Primary through to the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Music is a universal language, a means by which students from all different parts of the world can communicate with one another and express their emotions. There are dedicated music facilities in both the Primary School and Secondary School, including a suite of Apple Macintosh computers loaded with the latest composing software.

Primary School

Specialist music classes are taught to all students from Pre-Nursery to Year 6. From Nursery, the students study music through the Juilliard Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme and develop keyboard and instrumental skills and cultural literacy through a selection of twelve core works of repertoire. Their learning is supported by visits from Juilliard Alumni, Juilliard Curriculum Specialists and a range of singing and performance opportunities.

The school has a range of ensembles that rehearse weekly and include Orchestra, Choirs, Tuned Percussion Ensemble, Rock Bands and small instrumental ensembles. All students have the opportunity to study instruments privately with a group of visiting specialist teachers who deliver the Instrumental Music Programme. These students share their learning through the Recitals programme during Terms 2 and 3.

Secondary School

When students join the Secondary School the variety of music they study broadens. Year 7, for instance, will study medieval music, folk music, rhythm and pulse, and form and structure. In Year 8, Jazz improvisation, Indian music and recycled themes all form part of the curriculum. In Year 9, the students tackle soundtracks and film scores, rock ‘n’ roll, Samba and much more. Students may opt to study Music at GCSE (Years 10 and 11) and again for the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Alongside the curriculum the Music Department offers a wealth of opportunities outside of the classroom, which are listed under extra-curricular activities.  Specialist tuition is available in singing, strings, drums, piano, brass, woodwind, guitar and ukulele and the students are encouraged to perform both in school and within the local community whenever the opportunity arises.
