Astronaut Science Workshop

The Astronaut Science Workshop provided an exciting and fun introduction to the principles of space science for students from Year 5 to Year 9. The weekend workshop, led by the UK National Space Academy's Judith Green, saw 50 students engaged in a range of exciting activities and experiments. Judith is a Physicist and Chemist who was selected to present Teacher Masterclasses at NASA's 2009 Space Exploration Educators Conference.

Over two hours, the students were given an introduction to space physics, chemistry and biology. They discovered just how tiny humans, and indeed the Earth, are compared with the vastness of space. They found out what fuels the rockets and satellites that make their way into space and even got to make and launch their own rockets. They explored pressure and propulsion and learnt about some of the rather inconvenient aspects of space travel - like how astronauts go to the toilet.

Judith's presentation also included a very exciting experiment modelling a rocket launch.
