Week Beginning 16 January 2017

After a busy first week we are so impressed at how quickly children have settled back into their school routines. Thank you to all the parents for your support in this.

MESSAGES

  • Please remember to ensure that your child’s water bottle and snack box are labelled, as well as any new coats or jackets they may have, this helps us very much when items do occasionally go astray.
  • Thursday 26 January will be the annual ‘Wear Red Day’ for the Chinese New Year celebration.  There will also be a Dragon dance at approximately 8:30am (once buses have arrived).  Parents are welcome to watch.

LEARNING THEME

We are excited to begin our new topic on Chinese New Year … it is going to be packed with fun and culture rich activities. We will find out about the traditional ways to celebrate the most important festival in China. We will introduce and act out the story of the Great Race of the twelve Zodiac animals. We will have a big focus on roosters as 2017 will be the year of the rooster.  Our role-play area will be transformed into a Chinese restaurant where the children will be making dumplings out of play dough, using chopsticks, and taking orders.

KEY VOCABULARY

Chinese New Year, red, race, rooster, stir fry, noodles

Literacy and Expressive Arts and Design

Next week the children will be looking at examples of Chinese artwork and, in particular, blossom paintings. We will use this to inspire our own blossom paintings, which will then become the front cover of our Chinese New Year cards. When finished, the children will then be encouraged to write a little message for their loved ones inside their cards.

KEY VOCABULARY

Card, blossom, painting, message
