OUR LEARNING THEMES

The Polar Bear class are still deep under the sea and will continue this focus for another week, working on themes around the sea and water. This will include studying creatures that live under the sea and looking at features of their bodies such as fins and eyes, and counting octopus legs and starfish points. Other classes will continue with the rocket theme, introducing some rhymes around space travel and extending this topic to include other aspects of outer space such as stars and moons. This will all incorporate an overarching counting focus.

KEY VOCABULARY

Space, under, fin, eye, star, moon

MATHS

Maths can be developed in any area of the children’s play, and as teachers we frequently look for opportunities for the children to build on their knowledge of numbers and counting whether they are playing in the role play area, with blocks or riding the bikes outside.  Children can count steps, blocks, laps of the playground or anything they see or do in their everyday life.  At Pre-Nursery level we encourage children to develop basic counting skills as well as beginning to recognise some single digit numbers in their environment.  This week we will include many songs and rhymes that build on our understanding of the sequence of numbers and counting.

KEY VOCABULARY

Count, number, number names from 1-9
