Week Beginning 10 April 2017

MESSAGES

  • Tuesday 11 April - Year 1 trip to Shanghai Natural History Museum
  • Now the weather is getting warmer, please could you encourage your child to bring in a hat and also a water bottle so that they remain well hydrated during the day.
  • Our school librarians are in school until 4:30pm on a Monday and Tuesday.  If, as parents, you would like to borrow books you can set up afamily account.
  • TERM 3 ECA/BISCAP/BISS Lions Swimming: Programmes will begin on Monday 17 April and run until Friday 16June 2017. Confirmation letters will be sent out during the first week back.

LITERACY

This week we will be writing a recount about our trip to the Natural History Museum. Children will be practising writing sentences and using time connectives to write a recount in chronological order.

MATHS

This week we will looking at place value and the value of a digit within a number. We will revise how we write the names of numbers between 0 and 100 and then be working on improving our speed and accuracy when counting on in jumps of 2, 5 and 10.

PHONICS

Sharks

Over the next few weeks we will be learning about split digraphs. A digraph is two letters together which make one sound. When a digraph is split by a constant it becomes a split digraph e.g. i-e – like. The split digraphs we will be learning to read and spell in context are; a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e and u-e as in make, bike, rode

Puffer Fish

This week the Puffer Fish group will be continuing to practise the sounds t and b. They will learn how to say the sounds and read them when they are blended with other sounds to make words. We will focus on the words- bit, bed, bad, ted, ten, top. They will also practise the tricky words- and, mum, dad and the.

Starfish

This week Starfish will be learning alternative pronounciations for ch and j. They will learn the alternative spelling of ‘ch’, ‘tch’ and ‘t’ as well as ‘j’ , ‘dge’ and ‘g’. The children will practise reading and spelling polysyllabic words such as: stitches, scratching, picture, future, dodging, gentle, henges .  The children  will also practise spelling their set of High Frequency Words.

Stingrays 

After the holiday we will revise the key sounds we learned just before we left. These  are: or, ur and ow. In addition to these, we will be learning the new digraph 'oi' and will be spelling words such as boil, oil, spoil, foil and toil.

Ocotopus

This week we will revise the key sounds we learned just before the break. We will be focusing on ‘oi’ and ‘ear’. Children will practise using the sounds and find words which have has this spelling pattern.

Jellyfish

This week in Phonics, Jellyfish we will begin Phase 5. We will learn the sounds: ay (tray, day), ou (cloud, found), ie (tie, pie), ea (seat, meat). We will also be learning to read the tricky words, which you can’t decode: oh, old, their, said and so.

THEMED LEARNING

This week we will introduce our new topic ‘Plants & Insects’. The children will learn how to sketch and create detailed observational  drawings of plants.

COMPUTING  AND  DIGITAL LITERACY

Over the coming weeks our coding lessons will continue to focus on having an increased number of moveable objects, each with specific directions linked to the pressing of keys or swiping of the screen. As we start to enter our literacy focus of traditional tales the children will create apps based on the fairy tale theme.

DUTCH

Deze kinderen van KS1 starten deze week een nieuw thema `Wat een kunst!`  We komen alles te weten over het museum aan de hand van het boek `Willewete: het museum` en buigen  ons over de vraag `Wat is nu eigenlijk kunst?`.

De letter van de week is de –ou- van  zout en hout!
