Week Beginning 23 January 2017

Thursday 26 January will be the annual ‘Wear Red Day’ for the Chinese New Year celebration. Children can come dressed in red or in Chinese costume.There will also be a Dragon dance at approximately 8:30am (once buses have arrived).  Parents are welcome to watch.

MESSAGES

  • The Year 1 team would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. Although the holiday has come around quickly since Christmas, do enjoy the break and continue to focus on reading outside of school and spelling. The key phonics sounds and High Frequency Words can all be found in the back of the Commmunication Book.
  • Raincoat and Cold Weather- Please ensure that your child brings a raincoat to school for the wet weather and a coat now that the tempature has dropped.
  • Swimming - Please be aware that the days are getting colder and wetter so please dress your child accordingly.  On swimming days girls may wear dark leggings and matching dark socks instead of tights to make it easier for them to get dressed.  A warm hat is also recommended.
  • Lost Property -Our lost property cupboard is full to over flowing.  Next week on Tuesday and Wednesday items from the cupboard will be laid out on tables in the front playground.  Please encourage your child to see if they recognise any clothes or objects; if you can please come yourself to check claim items.  We will be re-cycling anything unclaimed over Chinese New Year.

LITERACY

In Literacy this week the children will be learning about the story of the Chinese Zodiac. They will be sequencing the story and retelling the story in their own words.   Children wil also be introduced to reading intructions. They will be learning about the features of instruction writing, reading intructions and writing their own.

THEMED LEARNING

This week the children will finish making their superhero capes. They will learn about decoration and what materials they can use to decorate and embellish their capes. The children will also be learning about Chinese New Year and have the opportunity to carry out activities linked to the Chinese New Year led by the Year 1 learning assistants.

MATHS

We will continue to embed multiplication this week, we will continue to look at doubling numbers then moving on to counting on in jumps of 5 and 10.  We will have a stonger focus on creating arrays and thinking of multiplication as 'lots of' and, once that concept is secured, we will be writing number sentences using the multiplication symbol.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING  AND  DIGITAL LITERACY

Our coding lessons continue this week as the children begin to be more competent in their use of basic coding structures. The children are now creating codes for more than one character at a time.

PSHCE

This week we will be continuing to focus on positive and the langauge that we can use to support ourselves and the people around us.

PHONICS

Puffer Fish - This week the Puffer Fish phonics group will be consolidating their knowledge of the sounds-l, ll and ss. They will be combining them with previous sounds to make new words such as lip, full, pull and hiss. They will also be learning to blend and read the high frequency words- no, go, to, the.

Jellyfish - This week the Jellyfish phonics group will begin Phase 4 where they will practise recognition and recall of Phase 2 and 3 graphemes and the reading and spelling of CVC words They will also learn and practise the reading and spelling of CVCC words e.g. went, help, camp, gift, toast, shift, joint, thump etc. 

Octopus - This week the Octopus phonics group practise recognition and recall of Phase 2 and 3 graphemes and the reading and spelling of CVC words. They will also begin to apply their knowledge to spell unfamiliar CVCC words.

Starfish –  This week Starfish will be learning the alternative pronunciations for y, ch and ou. They will learn to read and write words such as: yes, by, very, chin, school, chef, out, shoulder, could and you. They will also learn the tricky words: any, eyes, friends, once and please.

Sharks –  This week the sharks will be practising the recognition and recal of all learned Phase 5 sounds. Our focus will be on ‘aw’ and high frequency words such as; little, out, like, when etc.

MANDARIN

We will be introducing 12 Zodiac animals. Children will make and taste traditional sweet dumplings.

De prinsessen van groep 2 verdiepen zich deze week verder in de wereld van de ridders en de jonkvrouwen.   Deze week maken we kennis met Ridder Joris in `Joris en de draak`.  Wie zal erin slagen om de draak te verslaan?

Deze week herhalen we alle  korte klanken, lange klanken en tweetekenklanken naar aanleiding van de komende CITO-toetsen.
