Topics in Year 4

The children in the primary school at BISS Puxi follow a thematic curriculum with one main topic for each term. Specific skills for every subject are taught through these topics, ensuring subject rigour. This creative curriculum allows for collaboration and exploration making learning active, exciting and meaningful for children.

Term 1 Inventions

During this topic the children will become inventors. At the start of the topic they will use their historical research skills to investigate famous inventions  and inventors, this will lead into the children creating a mini-project  about Leonardo Da Vinci. The children will make their own sketch books  in Art lessons and use these books to record ideas for their own inventions.  The children will then investigate how to create an electrical circuit  during their Science lessons. Using this knowledge the children will plan and  create their own invention using an electrical circuit. Following a trip to the Shanghai Auto Museum, the children will design their own cars.

How can I support my child?
  • Talk to your child about inventions  that have been developed in their lifetime e.g. mobile phones.
  • Discuss the idea of a timeline with your child so they can place different inventions in context.
  • It would be great for your child to have prior experience of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Why not share the novel and compare the new and old move? Having an atlas at home will also help your child become more familiar with the world around them.

Term 2—Active Planet

During this topic the children will learn about the causes and effect of natural disasters. The term starts with a bang as they will investigate how to make a volcanic eruption using only  vinegar and baking soda. Following this, the children’s Science skills are tested further by the attempt to build an earthquake proof building with only spaghetti and marshmallows.  The children will learn about volcanic eruptions throughout History by investigating primary resources such as photos, newsreels and paintings. While in Art lessons the children will learn how to  produce a multilayer print, drawing inspiration from the Japanese artist Hokusai’s prints of Mount Fuji.

How can I support my child?
  • Talk to your child about natural disaster that might occur in their home country.
  • Use an atlas to locate tectonic plate lines and volcanoes around the world.

Term 3 - Explorers

This  term the children will become explorers. The children will investigate explorers from different times and the reasons why people seek out adventure and discovery. They will learn many skills that can help them with exploration including mapping, and shelter building. The main focus of this term’s work is to plan and research a trip to a real life destination. The children must plan every detail of the expedition  from what equipment they require, costing flights and accommodation.

How can I support my child?
  • Tell the children about famous explorers from their home country.
  • Let the children help you to book holidays or flights with you and assist you with packing your bags!
