Week Beginning 13 March 2017

MESSAGES

  • Year 5 will be going on an exciting educational visit to the Shanghai Museum and the Shanghai Fabric Making Museum on Wednesday 15 March. This visit is connected with our Themed Learning focus, The Silk Road.  Students will be required to wear uniform as normal on the day, but should wear comfortable walking shoes and a jacket. Students who normally have school lunch will be provided with a packed lunch on the day. All other students will need to provide their own lunch. You may pack an additional drink and small healthy (nut-free) snack should you wish to.
  • Year 3 & 5 Art Exhibition
  • Each child in Years 3 & 5 has chosen a piece of art work that they are most proud of this term. The exhibition will take place in ground floor of the Primary building during the week commencing Monday 13 March. You are invited to come and view all the art work between 8.00 and 8.30 any morning during this week. We hope you enjoy the exhibition.
  • Please ensure that your child has the correct school uniform. In particular please ensure your child is wearing black shoes. Girls should wear plain white socks and boys should wear black or grey socks. You can review the school’s uniform policy here.

LITERACY

This week in Literacy the children will be thinking about what makes a great book review and how to recommend a book to a friend. They will then be delving into an author study of Shaun Tan, who is both an illustrator and author of some mesmerising and kaleidoscopic picture books and animations. The first book we will enjoy is The Lost Thing, identifying the key themes and literary style of the author.

MATHS

This week in Maths we shall be looking at how percentages work. The children will work with equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages and solve problems involving data and percentages. They will learn how to express simple figures as a percent and become familiar with common conversions, such as  half, quarter, tenth, and fifth.

THEMED LEARNING

This week’s main focus will be on the Year 5 trip which takes place on Wednesady. The children will be introduced to the activity sheet that they will complete during the visit and there will also be time to follow up on what  the children have found out. The Science focus of the Themed Learning unit is Adaptation. The introduction to this unit will cover what this means and how different animals adapt to ensure that they survive in their habitat.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING  AND  DIGITAL LITERACY

We are continuing our exciting  series of  blogging lessons and this week will be writing our first blog onto our Weebly site. We will be looking at using correct editing tools and deciding the style of language to use. We will then learn how to add a photograpgh to the blog and how to edit it, using Weebly software. Children have been asked to download the “Weebly” app, so they may work on their blogs at home if they wish to.

PSHCE

This week the children will be focusing on health and hygiene. We will discuss how a healthy balanced diet and drinking plenty of water are important choices. We will link this discussion to our imaginary journey on the Silk Road, thinking about the importance of water and how this resource is essential for a healthy lifestyle. This will also link into our Worl Water Day which will take place in the following week.

Year 5  Spanish -  Ms Watson

We are using preposition to describe where items in a house can be found. Students will be able to describe the room and location in the room to find a range of items and ask where items are.
For homework students have been asked to learn a Spanish pop song. We have looked at Shakira and a Katy Perry song already but they have been asked to find their own. This is to help them to develop their fluency and to understand the speed at which they should be speaking Spanish.

Next week we will be continuing to use prepositions to describe where things are. We will be learning the names for items in the classroom, particularly stationary items.
Homework this week is to revise items in the classroom using Linguascope in preparation for a knock-out challenge next week.

Year 5 / 6 French – Ms De Borger

Next week we will write the steps for the quiche recipe we designed in class.  We will make a short crust dough and add our own quiche mixture.   We encourage the children to bring in extra ingredients for their personal recipe.

This week’s homework will be making a shopping list for their quiche recipe.

Year 5/6 French - Ms Rae    

Next week we will be focussing on sentence construction and revising the different parts of the irregular verb, aller. We will also be using dictionaries to find out the meaning of some words for transport in French.
Homework this week is revise school subjects. Log on to http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primarylanguages/french/school_day/games/magic_cards_subjects, how fast can you match the subjects up? Please record your times in your communication books. You will need VPN to access this website.

La semaine prochaine, nous préparerons une dictée sur les mots en [e] et les temps de l’indicatif que nous  ferons jeudi. Mercredi, les enfants auront une compréhension de lecture à faire. Pour les devoirs, il faut compléter la feuille d’exercice sur les noms en [e] donnée en classe.

Es war die pure Fantasie gefragt! Wir haben die Wikinger beschrieben, und zwar so genau wie möglich. Dabei galt es, die treffenden Adjeltive zu finden.

Zu Hause sollten die Kinder ein Wikinger-Poster gestalten und den Wikinger malen und beschreiben. Dabei sollten sie natürlich möglichst viele Adjektive benutzen.

La semana que viene vamos a seguir trabajando los cuantificadores numerales e indefinidos. Como deberes, deben traer un libro de lectura de su elección que tienen que empezar a leer este fin de semana.

DUTCH

Een hele kunst

We starten met een nieuw thema waarin Kunst met een grote K centraal staat. We leggen de nadruk op beschouwen en ervaren en het formuleren van onderbouwde meningen.

Verschillende boeken staan weer centraal, waaronder: ‘Willewete, Naar het museum’, ‘Het grote Rijksmuseum voorleesboek’, ‘Kunst voor kinderen’, ‘Kunstige Kwasten’ en ‘De Stip’.

Deze week hebben we het over feit en mening en kijken naar kunst. Samen met de leerlingen werken we een woordbank uit.

De Cito-resultaten van de meeste kinderen worden maandag mee naar huis gegeven. Een enkele leerling moet door afwezigheid nog een toets afmaken of inhalen. De uitslagen van deze leerlingen volgen later deze week.
