Week Beginning 16 January 2017

ECA/BISCAP/BISSLIONS Swimming Term 2: will start on Monday 16 January.

MESSAGES

  • Welcome back and a Happy New Year to everyone!
  • Thursday 26 January will be the annual ‘Wear Red Day’ for the Chinese New Year celebration.  There will also be a Dragon dance at approximately 8:30am (once buses have arrived).  Parents are welcome to watch.
  • On Tuesday Year 5 will be having their entry point for our exciting new topic, The Silk Road. This event will allow children to experience some of the emotions and feelings that travellers experienced whilst travelling along the Silk Road.  Keep an eye out for our blog post this week with photogrpahs of this exciting experience.
  • Uniform:  Now that it is colder in the mornings please remember that children should not be wearing leggings, boots or hoodies.  They should be wearing school jumpers/cardigans/fleeces and NOT non-uniform versions.  Information is available on the Primary Parent Handbook on the website.

LITERACY

This week in Literacy we will begin looking at diaries; their features and the different styles. We will compare those from a modern time setting to ones from selected historical periods. The children will then plan and create a modern diary entry incorporating all the features and with a particular focus on using the Present Perfect Tense.

MATHS

This week the children will be working with multiplication and division. The focus will be on problem solving using and developing and extending the skills they have acquired during the last term. Children will solve problems involving scale and rates, noticing and extending patterns. They will explain and explore how recepies can be made for larger and smaller amounts and will be encouraged to use the correct units of measure, efficient calculating methods, decimal place value and appropriate remainders.

THEMED LEARNING

This term our new Themed Learning topic is the Silk Road. The children  will start to learn about this important trade route. This week we will have our exciting Entry Point to the topic. The children will be be trading the goods at the market (souk) that they made last week and will carry these whilst taking part in a fun journey throughout the school. Along their journey they will encourter many obstacles along their way. This experience will help them to imagine what it was like to make this journey and they will encounter some of the challenges of trading and bargaining to buy the goods that they need. It promises to be an exciting experience!

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING  AND  DIGITAL LITERACY

We are continuing our E-safety unit by looking at other hazards children might encounter when online.  We will look at the correct definitions for these and discuss different scenarios that might occur and safe strategies to use if it happens.  Finally we will collate our knowledge into an E-Safety leaflet.

PSHCE

In PSHCE this week we will focus further on fostering new relationships, creating rules and expectations for the group and how to work together successfully.  We will reflect on what we achieved last term and discuss new personal targtes for the term ahead. We will also welcome some new children to Year 5 and will discuss how we can be helpful in settling them into their new school.

Year 5 / 6 French – Ms De Borger

Next week we will start writing the script for our video project ` Voice  notre éc ole`.   We will present our favourite places in school, interview some of our teachers and we will talk about the subjects on our time table.  The result of our work will be sent to our pen pal friends of the British School in Ho Chi Min, Vietnam.

This week there will be no homework because of the start of the new term.

Year 5/6 Native French – M. Valente

La semaine prochaine, nous étudierons les adjectifs et pronoms possessifs (et leur orthographe). Nous travaillerons aussi sur les pronoms démonstratifs. Ce weekend, les enfants doivent compléter les exercices sur les pronoms directs et indirects donnés en classe.

Year 5/6 Native German – Ms. Brannasch

Die Kinder tauschten über ihre Erlebnisse und Abenteuer in den Winterferien und übten, nach vorgegebenen WWW-Fragen ihre Erlebnisse aufzuschreiben.

Sie haben neue Bücher in der Bibliothek ausgeliehen und sollen weiterhin zu Hause lesen und im Lesetigerheft schreiben oder malen. Wir sind fast am Ende unseres Themas „Fledermaus“ und haben nun folgende Aspekte im Fokus: Wortstamm und Wortfamilie, verwandte Wörter mit  p-, b- t-, d- und g-k. Vor Chinese New Year wird es einen Test geben. Zu Hause sollen die Kinder also die KV 29/30 aus dem Booklet machen: „Verwandte Wörter kennen“.

La semana que viene seguiremos trabajando los posesivos en el sintagma nominal. También estudiaremos la tilde en las palabras llanas. Para deberes, deben completar el ejercicio sobre la unidad.

DUTCH

Blijspel

De komende weken werken de leerlingen aan het thema ‘Blijspel’. We verdiepen ons deze week in de wondere wereld van ridders, kasteelheren en Karel de Grote. We analyseren de legende over Joris en de Draak (Y3 en 4) en lezen Middeleeuwse verhalen. Ook leren we over emoties en hoe een toneelstuk of film je kan ‘raken’, vervelen, vermaken, etc.

We bereiden ons tevens voor op de Cito-toets die vanaf 13 februari zal worden afgenomen. We toetsen de onderdelen technisch en begrijpend lezen, woordenschat en spelling. Deze week zullen we veel spellingcategorieën herhalen.
