Week Beginning 17 October 2016

MESSAGES

  • Year 5 will be going on an exciting educational visit to the Shanghai Urban Planning Museum on Thursday 20 October. This experience is connected to our Themed Learning topic, ‘Building a Village’.
  • We will be leaving school at approximately 8.50am and returning to school in the afternoon in time for the usual end of day arrangements.
  • Students who normally have school lunch will be provided with a packed lunch on the day. All other students will need to provide their own lunch. You may pack an additional drink and small healthy (nut-free) snack should you wish to.
  • Students will be required to wear uniform as normal on the day, but should wear comfortable walking shoes and a jacket.
  • We would like two parent volunteers from each class to support us on this day. Please let your child’s class teacher know if you would like to volunteer.
  • Please ensure that your child has the correct school uniform. In particular please ensure your child is wearing black shoes. Girls should wear plain white socks and boys should wear black or grey socks. You can review the school’s uniform policy on our website.

LITERACY

This week the children will be exploring the genre of explanation texts. We will receive an exciting letter from some villagers who are looking for Year 5 to design and explain their beast-catching creations. We will be looking at what features explanation texts have and the children will be learning how to use causal connectives to make their writing flow.

MATHS

This week the children will be learning how to calculate areas of rectangles and squares and perimters of compound shapes. They will experience different units of measure and compare them, learning about the connecting relationships. The children will be challenged to use their knowledge and skills to solve and explain problems, which include finding patterns and  making predictions.

THEMED LEARNING

This week we will be going on a trip to the Urban Planning Museum. The children will learn about how cities and towns are planned and what features they require. In particular the students will learn about Shanghai. They will study old maps and photographs from the past and compare them to modern day life in Shanghai, discussing how the city has changed over time. They will also learn about urban planning for transport and green spaces. The exhibits will also help them to learn about the geology of shanghai, how it formed and what it may have looked liked billions of years ago. It promises to be a very exciting trip!

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING  AND  DIGITAL LITERACY

This week pupils will continue with their unit of coding lessons. The children will continue to write basic computer codes to make an on-screen avatar move in different directions. The children will also attempt to get their avatar to change speed as it moves across a route.

PSHCE

During our trip the children will think about cities of the future. They will discuss some of the challenges facing large cities like Shanghai and will design a city of the future by thinking carefully about issues such as waste management, recycling, pollution and housing density!

Students will revise opinion phrases me gusta, no me gusta, me encanta and odio and to give opinions about food and colours as a revision of these vocabulary items.  Focus will be on the on the question ¿Qué piensas? and using porque (because) as an extension.

This week we will be investigating the weather, learning basic vocabulary to describe what it is like at different times. We will write a script and then use that to create a weather forecast using our iPads.

Next we will look at French weather forecasts describing different types of weather and will write a short weather forecast. 

This week’s homework will be preparing 3 questions about gender or vocabulary we studied in class  for our Kahoot quiz.  This app has been installed on the school iPad. 

Year 5/6 Native French – M. Valente
La semaine prochaine, les élèves continueront de travailler sur quelques-uns des homophones principaux de la langue française. Ils referont aussi le test de cette semaine sur le présent de l’indicatif (les tests sont dans leur cahier et ils le repasseront mardi).
Pour les devoirs, il faut réviser les verbes irréguliers difficiles (sur www.conjuguemos.com et en vérifiant sur www.leconjugueur.com) et faire la feuille d’ exercices sur les homophones donnée en classe.

Year 5/6 Native German – Ms. Brannasch
Die Kinder haben diese Woche die Grundregeln über die Nomen wiederholt und geübt. Ebenfalls haben wir die Nomen kategorisiert (Lebewesen, Dinge, Orte usw.) und die Zusammenhänge herausgearbeitet, was nun die Nomen sind. Nächste Woche werden wir die Adjektive untersuchen, vor allem die Adjektive, die von den Nomen abgeleitet werden (Wut-wütend).
Zu Hause sollten die Kinder ihre Nomen-Kenntnisse konsolidieren und im Booklet KV9 „Nomen in der Schule“ machen.

La semana que viene vamos a trabajar las conjugaciones verbales (presente y pasado) de los verbos regulares. No hay deberes porque estamos acabando las presentaciones sobre nuestras vacaciones.

DUTCH

Van Reisbureau naar Vroeger...

De leerlingen hebben hun vakantie-ervaringen verwerkt in prachtige reisverslagen met een imaginaire twist aan het einde, het reisverhaal. We maken deze verhalen af, evalueren het thema en ronden daarmee het thema Reisbureau SDS af.

Het is kinderboekenweek in Nederland en het thema van dit jaar is: ‘Voor altijd jong!’ waarin opa’s en oma’s centraal staan. In KS2 werken we daarom de komende weken rond het thema: Vroeger was alles ... We poetsen onze interviewtechnieken op ter voorbereiding van een interview met opa of oma over Skype; onderzoeken wat opa’s en oma’s vroeger deden (want hoe is het leven zonder internet en iPad?), schrijven verhalen en denken na over onze families.
