Week Beginning 21 November 2016

This week is Poetry Week!  Please contact your child’s class teacher if you would like to be a ‘mystery poet’ and share your favourite poem with the class.  Friday will be our dress-up day. Which character will you choose?

MESSAGES

  • Date for the diary: Year 5 will be having their Themed Learning Showcase on Wednesday 7 December from 8:50am – 9:40am. We would like to invite parents to join us in celebrating all of the hard work the children have done during their ‘Building A Village’ topic.
  • Please continue to support our Giving Tree bag sales to donate at the end of November. If you would like to buy any more, please take your money and reply slip to the uniform shop. If you need a letter, please contact your teacher and they will pass one on for you from the charity co-ordinator.
  • Now the weather is beginning to get colder, please send your child with a coat and/or school fleece clearly labelled with their name.  Please do not send ‘hoodies’.  Children may also like to bring a hat to keep their head warm, especially after swimming.  
  • Our KS2 parent readers have been invited to a workshop on Monday 21 November.  Invites have been sent.

LITERACY

This week to celebrate Poetry week, we are reading and analysing the narrative poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. We will be exploring the mood, rhythm and intonation needed when performing poetry aloud and try to apply those skills when we perform The Highwayman. Through the use of drama we will explore the motives and emotions of the different characters in the poem to aid our understanding of the poem. Finally, we will try to recreate a new stanza in the same style.

MATHS

This week the focus will be on multistep word problems, mostly involving mutliplication and division. The children will have opportunities to practise and refine their formal calculation skills with larger numbers and in some cases decimals. They will then apply these skills to unfamiliar situations, learning to use units of measure in context, scale up proportions and find simple fractional amounts.

THEMED LEARNING

‘Building a Village’

This week the children will continue to learn about microorganisms. The children will learn to carry out a science investigation. They will have to plan, carry out and evaluate their experiment. The children will make 4 different types of bread and will learn how the presence and absence of yeast affects the appearance of the bread. The children will also have a discussion about how microorganisms can be harmful and helpful to humans.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING  AND  DIGITAL LITERACY

This week we are moving on to our next unit of programming, learning more about how computers use property values and parameters to store information about objects. In this lesson the children will learn to write code that detects the length of a swipeXDragging a finger or fingers across the screen, e.g. swipe right or left. /drag eventXAn event is something that happens such as a mouse click, key press, or something that happens after an amount of time. and use it to set the speed of the objectXSomething on screen - in Espresso coding an object can be a picture, a button or a piece of text. . They will learn to set parameters for how objects move by writing code to detect the movements of other objects.

This week we will be discussing how to work effectively in groups. We will be assigning key roles to each of the group members in order to work more effectively together. They will also develop a range of collaborative group work skills including perseverance, decision making and compromising.

La semaine prochaine, nous allons travaillé sur le passé composé et les accords avec être et avoir (nous ferons peut-être une dictée si les enfants progressent bien). Pour les devoirs, les enfants doivent compléter la feuille d'exercice donnée en classe. Il est fort recommandé aux enfants d'utiliser conjuguemos.com régulièrement afin de pratiquer la conjugaison des verbes au passé composé.

Mit den Kindern haben wir diese Woche die Bibliothek entdeckt! Jeder hat sich ein Buch nach seinem Geschmack ausgesucht und nun haben die Schüler die Aufgabe, das Buch zu Hause zu lesen. Dazu gibt es ein Leseheft, wo sie dann ihre Gedanken zum Buch aufschreiben oder ein Bild malen können. Einmal pro Woche werden wir die Bibliothek besuchen, so dass die Kinder das ausgeliehene Buch zurückgeben und ein neues ausleihen können.

 La semana que viene trabajaremos los sinónimos, la sintaxis y ortografía del grupo nominal y comprensión lectora. Como deberes, tienen que completar las dos páginas siguientes del cuadernillo de ejercicios.

DUTCH

Vroeger was alles ...

De interviewvragen zijn voorbereid en de interviews zijn geoefend in de klas. In de aanvullende huiswerkbrief staat de instructie voor het af te nemen interview bij opa of oma. De leerlingen moeten het opgenomen interview uiterlijk 25 november inleveren op een memorystick (of meenemen op hun iPad). In de klas analyseren en bespreken we de interviews. Ook willen we een compilatie maken van beste vragen en antwoorden. Mocht de opa of oma in kwestie niet in de compilatie willen voorkomen, geef het dan tijdig aan.

We verdiepen ons verder in beeldspraak. Denk daarbij aan zegswijzen en spreekwoorden als: het gezin is de hoeksteen van de samenleving, het komt in de beste families voor, een aardje naar je vaartje hebben, het zit in je genen, het bloed kruipt waar het niet gaan kan, het zit in de familie, je eigen vlees en bloed en de appel valt niet ver van de boom. We spelen Taboe en ‘Who’s the man’ met deze spreekwoorden en met de themawoorden.

Tot slot zullen we in Y3 en 4 aandacht besteden aan de komst van Sinterklaas.
