Week Beginning 23 January 2017

Thursday 26 January will be the annual ‘Wear Red Day’ for the Chinese New Year celebration. There will also be a Dragon dance at approximately 8:30am (once buses have arrived). Parents are welcome to watch.

MESSAGES

  • Make sure you check out the Year 5 Blog to have a look at our photographs from the Silk Road Entry Point Day! 
  • Our lost property cupboard is full to over flowing.  Next week on Tuesday and Wednesday items from the cupboard will be laid out on tables in the front playground.  Please encourage your child to see if they recognise any clothes or objects; if you can please come yourself to check claim items.  We will be re-cycling anything unclaimed over Chinese New Year.
  • Uniform:  Now that it is colder in the mornings please remember that children should not be wearing leggings, boots or hoodies.  They should be wearing school jumpers/cardigans/fleeces and NOT non-uniform versions.  Information is available on the Primary Parent Handbook on the website.

LITERACY

This week the children will be continuing their work on diaries. The children will be writing, editing and improving a modern diary entry with a focus on how to show emaphasis through the use of bold and capitialised writing and inverted commas. The children will then start to look at the book ‘Father’s Road’, which is set during the time of the Silk Road, and begin to collect ideas for their historical diary account.

MATHS

This week we shall be looking at the properties of number. The children will review place value, factors, compostite and prime numbers. They will learn how to find the prime factors of a number and how these factors can be used in mental calculations to multiply larger numbers using informal methods. They will learn about square and cube numbers, using practical activities to reinforce their understanding of new concepts.

THEMED LEARNING

In Themed Learning the children will use a timeline to try and comprehend periods of time beyond living memory. Using research skills the children will place historical events, places and people in chronological order and become familiar with the terms, “Common Era and Before Common Era”. The children will also be introduced to the meaning of secondary and primary sources of evidence and use this information to judge the validity of what they find.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING  AND  DIGITAL LITERACY

We will be completing our unit on E-Safety this week by sharing our finished  E-Safety leaflets and  relflecting on the strategies we have discussed so far.  The children will also  have an opportunity to view the CEOP website and participate on online activites to consolidate their knowledge.

PSHCE

The children will be reflecting on the Silk Road trip that they took last week and will be discussing their feeligns and emotions during this long walk. They will use some of these emotions to help write their diary entries in Literacy. The pupils will also think about the skills that they gained during the activities they did during the Entry Point.

Next week we will be learning about different types of weather and will able to discuss weather in the different regions of Spain. This week, for homework, students are encouraged to practise their pronunciation and word recall through Duolingo.

This week there will be no homework because of the start of the new term.

Year 5 / 6 French – Ms De Borger

Next week we will start writing the script for our video project ` Voice  notre éc ole`.   We will present our favourite places in school, interview some of our teachers and we will talk about the subjects on our time table.  The result of our work will be sent to our pen pal friends of the British School in Ho Chi Min, Vietnam.

This week there will be no homework because of the start of the new term.

La semaine prochaine, nous étudierons les adjectifs et pronoms possessifs (et leur orthographe). Nous travaillerons aussi sur les pronoms démonstratifs. Ce weekend, les enfants doivent compléter les exercices sur les pronoms directs et indirects donnés en classe.

Die Kinder tauschten über ihre Erlebnisse und Abenteuer in den Winterferien und übten, nach vorgegebenen WWW-Fragen ihre Erlebnisse aufzuschreiben.

Sie haben neue Bücher in der Bibliothek ausgeliehen und sollen weiterhin zu Hause lesen und im Lesetigerheft schreiben oder malen. Wir sind fast am Ende unseres Themas „Fledermaus“ und haben nun folgende Aspekte im Fokus: Wortstamm und Wortfamilie, verwandte Wörter mit  p-, b- t-, d- und g-k. Vor Chinese New Year wird es einen Test geben. Zu Hause sollen die Kinder also die KV 29/30 aus dem Booklet machen: „Verwandte Wörter kennen“.

La semana que viene seguiremos trabajando los posesivos en el sintagma nominal. También estudiaremos la tilde en las palabras llanas. Para deberes, deben completar el ejercicio sobre la unidad.

DUTCH

Deze week werken we verder aan onze analyse van Karel en Elegast (Y5 en 6) en starten we met Reynaert de Vos (Y3 en 4). We richten ons met name op de verschillende personages en de rollen die zij spelen. Ook markeren we de moeilijke woorden in de verhalen en voegen die toe aan onze Taboe! pot. De overige Taboe! woorden komen uit het thema Plankenkoorts van Staal. Na de vakantie starten we met het schrijven van een  script voor onze grote Showcase op woensdag 1 maart. Allemaal een hele fijne vakantie gewenst!
