Week Beginning 27 February 2017

MESSAGES

  • This week is a short week. We will finish on Thursday 2 March and will return to school on Wednesday 8 March. No homework will be set for this week but the children may wish to participate in the many online activities on the Global Campus.

LITERACY

This week in Year 5 we will continue with Mystery Stories. The children will read the poem ‘Someone’ by Walter de la Mare. A mysterious knocking at the door invites the reader to read on and find out who is behind the door. The children will discover that no one is there! The children will discuss the mysterious elements of this poem and will use the structure to help write their own mystery poem.

MATHS

This week we shall be working with fractions. The children will practise converting from improper fractions to mixed numbers and become familiar with the formal vocabularly connected to fractions. They will review addition and subtraction of fractions, extending their understanding and fluency when working fractions with different denominators. Activities will also introduce students to the concepts required for multiplying and dividing fractions.

THEMED LEARNING

In Themed Learning we will continue our Silk Road topic. Pupils will be finding out who the Scythians were and will learn about why they were so succesfful on the Silk Road trade. The children will learn more about what items were traded and how cultures was exchanged between people and nations. The children will look at artifacts and explain what they can deduce from people of the time by looking at these examples of historical evidence.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING  AND  DIGITAL LITERACY

Year 5 will begin their exciting new Blogging unit this week, which will result in their own blog entitled “My Silk Road Journey”. We will start by looking at what defines a blog, blogging etiquette and how to safely respond on someones blog.

PSHCE

This week the children will be focusing on learning targets. The children will discuss and share their next steps for their learning, thinking about what they would like to improve. They will try to think of targets that are easily measured and what evidence they can show to prove they have met their target. We are looking forward to hearing the children’s thoughts and next steps.

Year 5  Spanish -  Ms Watson

Students will be learning how to tell the time in order to discuss the activities they do in their spare time. They are learning how to discuss the day and time they go to the movies, go shopping or play football. For homework children are encouraged to continue with Duolingo as it greatly helps with pronunciation and expands their vocabulary.

Year 5/6  Spanish -  Ms Caldwell

Next week we will be continuing to use vocabulary learned in our ‘Home’ Topic to describe where items in the household are. We will use adjectives and prepositions to describe where these items are.

Homework this weekend is to revise vocabulary.

We will continue to work on our storyboard of El Nuevo Traje del Emperador, and include speech relating to the story.
Homework this week will be to revise the use of tener.

Year 5 / 6 French – Ms De Borger

Next week we will try different French foods and talk about the French foods we like.

We will select our favourite recipes and  will start making a shopping list.

This week’s homework will be creating a pic collage presenting famous French landmarks and foods.

Next week in French we will be listening to and memorising a story, ‘The Tortoise’s Birthday.’ We will be recapping on the vocabulary for different animals and we will learn the different parts of the irregular verb áller.’
Homework this week is to complete the subject word search. Can you translate the subjects in French to English?

Year 5/6 Native French – M. Valente

La semaine prochaine il y aura un test sur les temps du futur, présent, passé composé, imparfait, passé simple et conditionnel. Cela me permettra de faire un bilan sur les progrès des enfants en conjugaison. Certains exercices seront des verbes à conjuguer en contexte (dans des phrases). Ce weekend, il leur faut réviser ces temps-là. www.conjuguemos.com !

Nachedem wir die Geschichte ueber Ulf, den kleinen Wikinger gelesen haben, haben die Kinder geuebt, zum Gelesenen Stellung zu nehmen. Das sollten sie auch zu Hause ueben, und zwar mit dem Text auf S. 66 im Booklet.

 La semana que viene aprenderemos palabras con sufijos. También trabajaremos los determinantes cuantificadores. Para deberes, tienen que repasar los determinantes demostrativos. 

DUTCH

Thema Blijspel

Deze week komt het thema Blijspel tot een hoogtepunt met de showcase op woensdag 1 maart van 17.00 – 19.00 uur. De leerlingen oefenen in aanloop op de show hun tekst en rol; werken aan de achtergrond en het decor en schrijven de tekst voor de achterflap voor op de gigantische zelfgemaakte boekenkaften van Karel en Elegast en Reynaert de Vos.

In verband met de Cito-toetsen is er geen huiswerk. Wel worden de leerlingen aangemoedigd om thuis, samen met u, hun tekst voor het blijspel te oefenen.

We hopen alle ouders te zien op woensdag 1 maart en kijken uit naar uw komst!
