Staff Profile: Fiona McConnon

Assistant Head of Secondary & Head of Global Languages

Fiona McConnon graduated from University College London (UCL) with an honours degree in French and from York University with a PGCE in French and sport. She subsequently taught English at a University in Lanzhou with Voluntary Service Overseas for two years, where she became fascinated by Mandarin. This led to her spending five years mainly in Beijing as a British Council – Chinese government scholar at the Beijing Languages Institute, completing a Masters in the Teaching of Chinese as a Foreign Language.

As Head of Languages at an International School in Beijing, she used western language learning methodologies in her Mandarin teaching to foster enjoyment and confidence in her students.  She more recently headed up the MFL and Classics Faculty in an outstanding school in north London, Northwood College, which excelled in developing deeper thinking in students.

She has held a number of management roles at the British Embassy and in UK-based charities involved in work related to China and has completed an MSc in Development Management with the Open University.

Fiona has particular interests in sports, reading, charity work and baking. She learned Chinese Kung Fu when she was a student in Beijing and now practices Taiqi fan and would like to learn Taiqi sword. She has a strong interest in working with vulnerable groups and giving something back to the community. She is interested in research on allergies and, with a number of severe food allergies in her family, is spending time sourcing gluten- and dairy-free products and places where she and her family can eat in Shanghai! She has one son, Michael, who is settling in well to life at BISS Puxi.
