Staff Profile: Michael Jolly

Michael Jolly

Year 2 Class Teacher

Michael graduated with a BSc in Sociology and Social Policy from the University of Southampton in 1989 before completing his PGCE at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He began his professional career in Blackpool before venturing overseas in 1994, working first in Kuwait and then Colombia, where he met his wife Margarita, before moving to Ethiopia.

In 2001 Michael and his family moved to Egypt where he was Year 2 Co-ordinator and after the birth of his second daughter, the family moved to Brunei where Michael spent five years as Deputy Head of the Junior School. After seven years the lure of a return to South America was too tempting and Michael took up the position of Director of Learning for Key Stage 1 in Uruguay. However, the appeal of China has drawn the family back to Asia.

Michael has always had a particular fondness for travel having grown up in an army family. He has scaled the heights of the Andes, trekked through the rainforest of Borneo and has travelled to more than 70 countries worldwide. He enjoys cooking, but not following particular recipes, as well as having an interest in photography. Most of his spare time is spent with his wife and two daughters, Claudia and Nathalia, often at the swimming pool. After recent moves, Michael and his family are looking forward to starting a long and happy life in Shanghai.
