    Head of English

    Gemma Treeby

    Gemma qualified with a First (BA Hons) in 2004 in English, Film & Drama from the University of Reading. She then embarked on a career in the Media allowing her to gain National and International Media Organisations including Granada, BBC, Capita Symonds and Disney.

    Holly Mitchell

    English Teacher / Head of Year 8

    Holly Mitchell

    Holly gained a 2.1 degree with honours at the University of Sheffield, graduating in the summer of 2010. She then transferred to Sheffield Hallam to undertake her teacher training, gaining a PGCE in secondary English.

    Holly believes in modelling learning for her students and understands the importance of developing her own practice, which is why she is currently completing a Master’s degree in Education.

    After working in a school in rural Northamptonshire for three years, she decided she would like a new challenge in an exciting environment. It was this that brought her to Shanghai.

  • Rachel Rhodes

    English Teacher

    Rachel Rhodes

    Rachel graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BA honours degree in English Literature in 2007 and went on to work in brand management and advertising development for both national and global brands including O2, Diageo and Premier Foods. Opting for a career change, she later completed a PGCE in English and Drama at the University of Warwick and has spent five years teaching in an outstanding Academy in the UK. After first working as a Key Stage 3 leader, Rachel then became a leader of Key Stage 5 learning in Literature and Media Studies and has enabled students to achieve excellent results in these areas. 

    A desire to combine her love of working with young people with her love of exploring new cultures led to Rachel joining BISS Puxi this year. She is motivated by enabling students to achieve highly and inspired by the ways in which Literature is able to change the way people think and act.

    Rachel Wright

    Rachel has worked at BISS Puxi for two years. Prior to coming to Shanghai, she taught English at several prestigious universities in Asia and managed the Language Department at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts for a number of years. She has also written and edited educational textbooks for Pearson (Longman) and Oxford University Press (HK).

    Rachel speaks Chinese, has a first class degree from the University of Durham, a PhD in English from the University of Oxford, a CELTA and PGCE. Since starting work at BISS Puxi, she has continued her professional education by taking IB teacher training courses, registering as an IB examiner of English Literature and, most recently, has undertaken a Nord Anglia University course in using technology in the classroom.

    Luke Thompson

    Originally from Manchester, Luke moved to study English Literature at the University of Sheffield in 2007, earning a 2:1 with honours. Following this, Luke decided to move to Keele University in order to complete a PGCE in English, graduating in 2012. Keen to remain in the West Midlands area, Luke secured a position at an outstanding Academy, where he has worked for the previous four years, gaining a wealth of experience teaching students of many different abilities.

    Katherine Cooper

    Katherine holds over ten years’ worth of experience as an educator, as an English Literature and Language teacher, TEFL teacher, Drama teacher and as a Media Studies teacher,  having experience teaching in Secondary, Primary, Nursery and International environments.  Prior to joining BISS Puxi, she was employed as a Secondary English Teacher at Doha British School, Qatar. After gaining her BA (Hons) in Theatre Studies and Drama from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2004, she returned to her birthplace, Hong Kong, to work. She worked in a variety of educational settings including at a Learning Centre and Kindergarten for three years and at a local primary school for two further years.   In addition, she worked as a Theatre in Education practitioner on a freelance basis.  During this time, she also created her own theatre company, for which she directed and wrote two productions staged at a local theatre.
