Matthew attended Brighton University where he gained a first class Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Geography and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education specialising in Secondary Geography. He worked in the UK for two years at an outstanding school in Northamptonshire where he was involved with a variety of ECAs including hockey coaching, Duke of Edinburgh Award and charity fundraising events. The move to BISS Puxi was an easy decision for a passionate geographer and educator, “I’m living in a case study! The rate of urban change in Shanghai is phenomenal, everywhere you look there is exciting human Geography happening right before your eyes. Industry, population, globalisation, Shanghai is a stunning example of it all. The sheer scale of China makes its physical landscapes incredibly diverse; there are examples of almost every environment and landform you could want to see. I can’t wait to explore the country, learn more about it and incorporate those experiences into my teaching”.
Matthew is a very active person and enjoys a wide variety of sports including running, cycling and hockey. He is a keen outdoorsman and likes to explore new environments and places. As one might expect of a Geographer, travelling is his favourite way to spend time off work. Keen to avoid the beaten track, Matthew has visited remote parts of several countries not on the standard holiday destination list. Last summer he volunteered at an afforestation project in Haiti which was focused on improving water and food security in a very poverty stricken part of the country.
What the students say about me...
“Mr Hill is always willing to give up his time for students. He has helped with DofE, charity events, he ran 11 miles to school and dressed up as a princess for Sport Relief!”
“He will help you with anything! He likes to crack silly jokes which make the classes fun.”
