  • Year 6 Weekly Roundup
English

This week, children have completed ‘up-levelling’ workshops to make their sentences more interesting to a reader. They practiced using different forms of figurative language. They then used these skills to plan and write their own story background.

Maths

This week, children have reviewed mental addition and subtraction including adding and subtracting multiples of 10, 100 and 1000 to and from six- and seven-digit numbers. They have also been adding and subtracting decimals to one decimal place and then decimals to two decimal places. Children then applied mental addition and subtraction to solve multi-step problems, focusing on understanding the problem and which calculations will lead to the answer.

Project Work

In IPC this week, children explored inventions and discoveries that have been made throughout the decades and decided which ones they considered to be the most and least important. We debated the statement that ‘the most recent inventions are the most important.’

Mandarin

This week, We learnt how to indicate the colours in Mandarin. The common structures about colours introduced to the students. The skills of describing the colours of objects were reinforced.

Computing

Students have been doing a problem solving game called Sugar, Sugar 2 on the www.abcya.com website.  This problem solving game incorporates logical thinking and trial and error to complete each level.  The levels increase in difficulty and allow pupils to solve each problem in a unique way.

Physical Education

During our PE lesson this week we have looked at pacing in cross-country. We have learnt to keep a constant pace as a team and as an individual, undertaking small drills to enhance our learning.

Music

This week Year 6 students revisited the context of Stravinsky's 'Rite of Spring' and last week's work on ostinato. After completing a listening exercise, students discussed the added effects of melodic layering in Stravinsky’s work.
