Mr Anthony Rowlands Weekly Update 18th March

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Michael Jordan

The above quotation is one of my favourites and the fact that it is said by one of the great sportsmen of our time makes it even more special to me. We have all met with failure at some stage in our lives which is the very time we need to show perseverance in order to move on and keep trying to achieve our goals. To experience failure is not a pleasant feeling but it is the most important life skill to be able to comprehend and come to terms with. Experiencing failure is the ultimate learning process that we need to go through in order to achieve future success and the joyful feeling that comes with it.

In relation to this, I have just watched our KS4 Boys play a wonderful football match against BVIS. They went one goal up early in the game but suddenly found themselves conceding two quick goals and losing. Heads dropped a little but they persevered and battled their way back into the game. BIS equalised and then it seemed to be heading for a draw but three quick goals from our boys saw BIS win 5-2. A classic game where we saw a great deal of skill, perseverance and, indeed, some failure and reaction to the fear of failure. Sport is full of great character and team building experiences and prepares us well for life in general.

Another sporting occasion I was lucky to be at recently was the end of the NAE Global Games in Hong Kong, where BIS Hanoi was competing. Individually, our students gained a lot of medals and personal bests. The older boys and girls also won team events with the boys winning overall. As teams, our younger boys and girls did not win and I could sense their disappointment and perceived failure. However, in due course, they will learn from the experience and the joyful feeling of future success will be even more pleasant.

Sport is like going through life - Enjoy the moment, persevere and don’t be afraid to fail;  then the rewards will come.
