Year 2 News

The Year 2 children are currently at a very busy time in their school life. As you will be aware, they are practicing very hard for their end of year show. This is a very important event for Year 2 children as it is a time when they are the oldest children in the EYC and therefore have the most demanding section of the show to perform. The production is extra to the other areas of their academic curriculum and assessment sessions that take place at this time of year. However, experiencing such an event at this stage and knowing their responsibilities for performing to the best of their abilities is vital for building confidence and preparing them for the future.

Through decades of practice and research, early learning through the arts has shown that by integrating the performance arts—music, drama, and dance—into core subjects, helps young children learn better across the curriculum. Arts-integrated teaching taps into children’s natural desire for active learning through the senses. By singing, dancing, imagining, and connecting their bodies and minds, children learn more deeply and meaningfully, especially in subjects like reading, maths and science. This is something we always have at the forefront of our minds when planning lessons for our children.

Studies confirm that arts-integrated lessons can boost learning in subjects other than the arts. Arts-integrated learning is not an extra or an add-on for early learning educators, but a valuable strategy to prepare young children for success in school.

What better way to consolidate a year of this vision and philosophy of teaching and learning than to perform in a whole Early Years Centre production. Our production is called ‘In My Dreams’ and portrays a little girl who falls asleep and has some exciting dreams, visiting various lands and meeting new friends such as; dinosaurs in prehistoric times; aliens in space and giant insects and flowers in her over grown giant garden. However, she also encounters some baddies along the way including an evil dream catcher who is trying to prevent her from awakening back to reality! The story is one of friendship and kindness. Will the little girl and her new friends be able to persuade the baddies that kindness and friendship rule?

The basis of the show revolves around many aspects we cover in our Personal, Social, Health and Emotional (PSHE) sessions we cover in class, for example, forming good relationships and the importance of friendship. It also incorporates aspects of the school’s Aide Memoir, aspects such as caring, respect and reflection. Content wise, it touches upon aspects of our IPC and Science topics so the children can all really relate to what they are singing about.

The children have gained so much from the experience and as teachers, we have noticed huge improvements in speaking and listening skills as well as the children’s self-esteem and confidence and most importantly, they had so much fun along the way which is what Year 2 always strive to offer, outstanding, high quality learning in a fun and inspirational learning environment.
We look forward to seeing you at the production on Wednesday 22nd June.

Best Wishes

Year 2 Team
