Dear Parents

BIS Hanoi engages with politics at several levels

Today, began with an excellent assembly delivered by the BIS Hanoi school council. The representatives explained their role in the school and helped our students understand how they could participate in making positive changes to the school. We learned how the council had influenced improvements to school lunches, recreational facilities and social activities.

They urged the student body to become active citizens in debating further improvements to the school. We are fully behind the work of the school council and believe that its energy is a good reflection of the health of the school.

During the assembly, we also heard from the Model United Nations Debate Team. They will be travelling to Bangkok in order to participate in an MUN conference, with students from other international schools.

Later, I spoke with students about a range of topics including surrealist art and gender equality. One student posed the question to me, why are male and female student uniforms different? At a time when it is important to promote gender equality, I felt this was an apt and very thought provoking question.

Working with children inspires you to engage with society and its norms. Children often challenge our assumptions and ways of knowing and this healthy practice is a welcome and positive part of the daily life of a teacher.

Did I know that musical talent was blossoming at BIS Hanoi?

The winter concert was a delightful early gift, as we approach the holiday season. There were piano, vocal, orchestral string and guitar performances, which reinforced our growing reputation for musical excellence.  It was heartening, also, to feel the sense of community burst forth from the brass band, the Year 7 class band and the magnificent school choir. Schools are busy places and it was a pleasure to sit down and enjoy the children and staff together celebrating their musical skill, learning and passion.

Constantly Improving our Sporting Programme

We enter the final week of the school term still in contention to qualify for the HAC basketball final four in all Junior Varsity and Varsity tournaments. This is a big improvement on our 2016/17 season, when the boys had been knocked out of both tournaments by the turn of December 2016.

The Varsity teams play Olympia tomorrow (Saturday morning at BIS) and the JV sides play against the International School of Vietnam on Monday 11 December at ISV. We wish the teams luck in their quest to reach the HAC Final Four.
