Dear Parents

Language in an IB school

Learning languages is a defining characteristic of an IB world school.  Whereas in a British school, that offers A levels, it might not be necessary for students to study in more than one language, in an IB world school, a student must study at least two languages. The home language or the mother tongue is valued and is seen as a point of reference for international learners as they try to understand others. The second language is learned for its value as a tool of communication but also for its value as a “teaching tool”.  When learners are engaged in trying to see the world through the language of another culture, they gain a greater understanding of how others perceive the world.  Understanding other learners and ways of knowing is at the heart of the IB philosophy.   Currently, every student at British International School, Hanoi has the option of learning at least two languages throughout their time at school.

Key Stage Three Curriculum Questionnaire

We are currently reviewing our Key Stage 3 curriculum and will soon be inviting parents to participate in a questionnaire. The questionnaire is almost complete and will be piloted later this month. Revisions will be made following the pilot stage and then parents will be invited to complete the final questionnaire. We hope that parents will welcome this opportunity to participate in the school’s development by providing us with the feedback we need to further improve our educational offer.

Wednesday 13 September, 5 pm, International Award Presentation

Four extraordinary International Award students will be telling the story of their summer Gold Award Expedition to South Korea. We warmly welcome all parents to come to this event and support the boys- the first children of Hanoi to complete the Gold award!

Music Opportunities

Excitement is building as the school prepares to announce the title of the secondary show.  In the meantime, lovers of music will be thrilled to learn that British International School, Hanoi will be hosting its first ever Battle of the Bands. If your children love banging the drums or rocking the foundations of the house with their blasting amp and vocals, encourage them to sign up. See Ms Rea for more details.

Finally, all parents are cordially invited to a Coffee Morning at 11:00am on Wednesday 13th September 2017 in the BIS Parent Lounge to introduce you to ABRSM – the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music. Our Performing Arts leader, Ms. Laura Rea, will give a short presentation about what ABRSM actually is, why it's important and its benefits.  In short, ABRSM is an opportunity for students to sit practical music exams, acquiring qualifications and certificates to support their future.

If you have any questions, there will be time to discuss these. If you are hoping for your child to start instrumental lessons at British International School, Hanoi, this would be the perfect occasion to find out more about our provision. We will also enjoy several live performances by some of the talented teachers who offer music lessons here at BIS Hanoi.

Tim Webb, Head of Secondary
