The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM)

  • British International School Hanoi | ABRSM

In the academic year 2017-18 the Instrumental Music programme at BIS Hanoi began its partnership with The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).  ABRSM, launched in 1889, is the UK’s largest music education body, one of its largest music publishers and the world’s leading provider of music exams, offering assessments to more than 630,000 candidates in 93 countries every year.

How BIS Hanoi students will benefit from ABRSM’s exams & syllabus

From the moment our students start their instrumental lessons at school this year, they will be following the ABRSM syllabus which not only pushes the students’ development, helping to create well-rounded and highly accomplished musicians, it also provides certificates and qualifications which can be used towards university entry.

Our students will have the opportunity to take a graded exam each year where they will be provided with hand-written feedback from their examiner, a breakdown of marks and a certificate of either pass, merit or distinction. Students who achieve a distinction, will be eligible to participate in the annual ‘High Scorers’ Concert’. Both the syllabus material and examiners will be flown into Hanoi from the UK. The grading system ranges from Grade 1 – Grade 8 and then on to diploma; the grades can be transferred into UCAS points to support university applications.
