The version of Treasure Island, performed by MP2 this week, closely follows the original story written by Robert Louis Stevenson with just a few slight differences. It tells the tale of Long John Silver and his ambition to retrieve the lost treasure of infamous pirate Captain Flint. To find the treasure, Long John Silver needs a map but it has been stolen and handed to a girl, Jen Hawkins. Jen arranges with her friends, Squire Trelawney and Doctor Livesey, to set sail to find the treasure. Sneaky Silver manages to pretend to be a ship’s cook and get himself and his crew hired on the expedition. At the first opportunity Silver organises a mutiny to take over the ship and find the treasure for himself. With the help of marooned pirate, Ben Gun, Jen Hawkins retakes the ship and helps rescue her friends from the evil pirates. The story ends happily with the treasure in the hands of the good guys and the evil pirates captured.
It took just three and half weeks of dedication and practise from the MP2 children to put together such a fantastic show. All the teachers were so very proud of how much the children have learned and grown in confidence. They should all be very proud of everything they have achieved over these last few weeks.
I would like to say a big thank you to all the people that helped to put on this fantastic show. Thank you to; the TAs who toiled to create amazing props to help the children plunge into role and act to the best of their abilities; the teachers who worked hard to instruct and prepare children and run the lights and sound during the performances; the support staff at TX that helped organise the gym and get it ready; and finally the parents that helped children at home to rehearse lines and orgainse costumes. Without such a wonderful community and team effort, I am sure the children would not be able to put on such an amazing show. Thank you.
The photos of the performance can be downloaded here and there will be a DVD on sale towards the end of next week.
