Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 09/12/16

Dear Parents,

I hope that you enjoyed last night’s Winter Concert as much as I did and left feeling filled with the joy of the season. There are lots of events to report back on this week:

Seoul Model United Nations 2016

Our MUN students had a very exciting visit to Seoul as over 600 students from across Asia and North America came together to debate world issues with ‘Embracing Diversity’ being the theme for this year’s conference. Representing the diversity of the BIS HCMC student body we were pleased to have 8 different nationalities represented in our team of 18. Read more about their adventures here.

Christmas BISzaar - A Huge Success!

Our Christmas BISzaar was a huge success and the hard work put in by the PTG, parents, staff and students really paid off and gave everyone a day to remember. The shopping was wonderful, the food really good and we were delighted that once all the proceeds from the day were counted we had been able to raise in excess of VND250,000,000 for school supported charities.

Many thanks go to the PTG, the vendors who supported the event, all those who shopped on the day, purchased raffle tickets, participated in the silent auction, volunteered their time to help and to our cleaning and security staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the day happen. A fantastic community event!

Winter Concert

The Secondary Winter Concert was held in the auditorium last night and featured superb performances covering a wide range of music, from over 220 APS musicians. Highlights included the exciting concert band with their ‘Secret Agent Santa’, the Irish Folk Group with ‘A Fairytale of New York’ as recorded by the Pogues and the beautiful Canadian ‘Huron’ Carol sung a-capella by the chamber choir. The complete ‘Snowman’ by Howard Blake, based on the book by Raymond Briggs featuring a Soprano soloist ‘Walking in the Air’ and narrator ended the first half. Playing a musical score to the film live was an ambitious undertaking for our musicians who impressed the audience with great levels of concentration and musicianship for the 20 minute piece. A ‘singalong’ of White Christmas ended the concert with snow falling in the auditorium and firmly placing APS well and truly in the festive season.

As always the students played to an incredibly high and professional standard and left the audience in a festive mood. My congratulations go to the musicians and the music department for yet another outstanding performance.

Sports Day

The annual Sports Day continues to be a highlight in the school calendar. The day was a festival of colour, competition and house pride.  Each student competed to the best of their ability working hard to earn valuable house points in the hope of securing overall victory and bragging rights at school. My special thanks go to staff and Sixth Form students without whom the event simply wouldn’t run. When all points are calculated which house will be victorious? Only time will tell, results will be announced shortly.
