Head Teacher’s Coffee Morning

I was delighted to see such a strong turnout for the Head Teacher’s Coffee Morning which took place this week. Approximately 80 parents listened to a presentation on digital citizenship and shared ideas of how they can best support their children online. As a result of discussion at this event we will be hosting workshops for parents around learning technologies and social media platforms later in the year. I was also able to give feedback on questions and suggestions received at the last Head Teacher’s Coffee Morning, and explain how we had been able to implement some of these suggestions. This open exchange of ideas has been welcomed by both parents and staff.

Brown and Penn Universities Visit

Last Friday, we were delighted to host the visit of Brown University and the University of Pennsylvania. Panetha Ott and Liz O’Connell gave a detailed presentation about their respective universities, the application process and the entry requirements.

The community support was brilliant. Over a 100 people supported this event, welcoming students, parents and staff not only from BIS but also from several other international schools

Look out for similar events later in the year.

Peace One Week 2016

This week we have been celebrating Peace One Week at BIS with lots of student led events have been taking place. On Wednesday, Peace One Day, we all dressed in white to mark our commitment to peace at every level, between individuals, communities and globally.

One of the highpoints of the day was our gathering together as a campus to symbolise our commitment to peace.

My congratulations go to all the students who have worked so hard to put the Peace One Week together.

HM Ambassador Visits BIS

We were delighted to host a visit from HM Ambassador to Vietnam, Giles Lever, this week. Ambassador Lever spoke to our Year 10 students about the benefits of a British style education, as well as hosting a lively question and answer session which covered topics such as Brexit and the educational path to be followed by those students interested in a diplomatic career.

Our thanks to Ambassador Lever for taking time out of his busy schedule to offer his insights and inspiration to our students.

IB Literature Trip To Quy Nhon

Our Year 12 & 13 students who have elected to study Vietnamese as one of their language options, enjoyed an educational visit to Quy Nhon last weekend. The visit focused on Vietnamese literature and history and the students were also able to take time out for a community service visit.

My Summer with Juilliard

As part of the Nord Anglia Group of Schools affiliation with the Juilliard School, one of our Year 7 students was lucky enough to spend two weeks of her summer holiday in Geneva studying with Juilliard affiliated musical artists. Man Nghi Trin from Year 7 gives us an insight into her experience.

The opportunity to take part in a summer program with Juilliard affiliated artists will be offered at Collège du Léman, Nord Anglia’s prestigious boarding school situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland again next summer. Students from all over the world will choose a focus of music (instrumental or vocal), dance, or drama, culminating in a final performance to celebrate what they’ve learned and created over the two week experience. During the programme, your child will be encouraged to grow as an artist and will be surrounded by students who share their enthusiasm for the performing arts.

Year 9 - Helping to Keep Vietnam’s Roads Safe

The Year 9 ILS lesson this week focused on Road Safety and as preparation for this year’s community service initiative the students were address by the AIP Foundation. The foundation is an NGO focused on road safety and works towards reducing the number of deaths and injuries on roads in Vietnam through a program of education and the wearing of bicycle and motorcycle helmets. For many years we have partnered with local schools in our ‘Helmets for Kids’ program and our current Year 9 students are looking forward to building on the work done in this area and helping to keep Vietnam’s children safe on the roads.

Year 9 - Learning Skills Development

This week our Year 9 students spent four lessons focused on the Learning Skills which are integral to their development at BIS. Their morning was spent competing in teams to produce coloured shapes and creating a presentation promoting their finished products. There were group prizes for collaboration and communication. Of particular note were the individual prizes for leadership awarded to Dylan Bonner Higham & Maika Pedersen and the environmental prize given to Duong Lam.

Year 9 Options Evening

If you were unable to join us for the Year 9 options evening this week please do sit down with your son or daughter and talk over with them their thoughts on selecting the subjects they would like to study for Year 10. The options booklet gives more information and advice on subject choices and content.
