Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 06/01/17

Dear Parents,

I hope that you all enjoyed the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Welcome to the start of Term 2. We have a busy start to the term with Year 7,8,9,10 & 12 all away on their school trips during the week of 16 January. My thanks go to the trip leaders, teachers and staff who work so very hard to put these exciting itineraries together and accompany the students on the trips. Our Year 11 and 13 students will be sitting their mock exams over this period and I wish them well as they prepare for these important examinations.

Acoustic Lounge

During the last week of term 1 students were entertained by their peers who had chosen to showcase their musical talents in our Acoustic Lounge session. This is an informal music event where any students can perform a song or piece of music in an informal atmosphere. We have so many talented students at the school that these events are always well attended and, once again, the quality of the music did not disappoint.

Lost Property Display

On Thursday 12 January at 12h30 we will display all unmarked items of lost property - of which there are many! Please encourage your children to come and look for items they have lost during the first term. We have many PE bags, trainers, items of school uniform, watches, and other assorted items waiting for their owners to claim them. We also have a massive collection of water bottles which are unclaimed. All unclaimed lost property in good condition is donated to school supported charities after it has been displayed.

Stanford University Award for Exceptional Teaching

We are exceptionally proud of Ms Lauren Binnington, Head of Sixth Form, who has received an award for exceptional teaching from Stanford University. Ms Binnington was nominated for the award by Hikaru Hotta, who graduated from BIS last year, and is now a student at Stanford University. Stanford University ranks number 1 in the US and number 3 in the world in the Times Higher Education University rankings. This is indeed an outstanding achievement for Ms Binnington and we are delighted to share her success.

Bakers Book Club Order

A letter has been sent by e-mail to parents today, and a catalogue given to students, offering the opportunity   to purchase high quality books that are not available in Vietnam. We also receive commission in the form of free books for the school libraries. Your orders have, in the past, added hundreds of books to our stock and we are very grateful for your help in this way.

Books can be ordered online and will be delivered to the school for students to collect. The closing date for placing orders is Sunday 22 January 2017.

Taking To the Stage At Huynh Van Ngoi School

As part of our extra curricular activity programme (ECA) two teams of students made weekly visits to the local Huynh Van Ngoi school to help the Vietnamese children stage a production. Riona Carriaga, Anh Khoa Tang, Carl Chua and Nathaniel Vo, ECA student leaders, tell us about their visits.

BIS HCMC Alumni talks

This week we were pleased to be able to welcome back some of our alumni - students who graduated from BIS HCMC in 2014, 2015 and 2016.  They spent valuable time talking to our Year 11, 12 and 13 students about their experiences of life after school and coping with the transition to university.

Tonight we are hosting a gathering of our Alumni for a social event. This is a great opportunity for our ex-students to network and forms part of our focus on developing our alumni links.

Summer School - Performing Arts with Juilliard

If you are currently exploring summer school options relating to music, dance and drama, we offer the opportunity for your child to explore their creative talents and work with renowned artists in one of the most beautiful cities in the world—Geneva, Switzerland. Full details and costs of the course, and a link to register your interest, is available on the school website.

Global Goals Club

This after school club explores the 17 sustainable development global goals set by the United Nations. The students have been focusing on goal number 4, Quality Education, and their campaign raises awareness of the issue and encourages people to act on it. The club hopes that their campaign will make a lasting impression on BIS HCMC students, who will become the future generation of leaders.

Thuy’s Dream Donation Handover

Following the very successful whole school coffee morning event organised by the PTG and Community Services department we were delighted to hand over the proceeds to the beneficiaries. Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

Tet Collection

Our Tet collection runs from 9 January to 13 February. Please help us make Tết 2017 extra special for the children of 9 of our community partners by donating high quality items such as stationery, toys, rice and noodles to our collection.
