Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 12/05/2017

Dear Parents,

I think this week’s newsletter really illustrates how many different events happen at our Secondary Campus each week - from the STEAM fair, to the creative writing competition, the geography competition, our visiting international comedy act,  and our sporting events, there is always something interesting for each and every student to participate in.

Global Campus Creative Writing Competition 2017

BIS HCMC were delighted to have stories from three of our students chosen from over 6,500 entries across 42 schools in the finals of the Nord Anglia Global Campus Creative Writing Competition this year. The brief to Secondary Students aged 14-18 was to tell a story on any topic, however the story had to be told in 500 words, not an easy task. We were very pleased to hear that Angelina Trang from Year 7, with her story The Half had been selected as a very worthy winner. Congratulations Angelina, we are all very proud of you.

Saigon STEAM Fair 2017

This fair supports the invaluable role that Science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) play in helping students to develop academic, social and personal success. Dr Suzanne Mincher, Science Teacher, and Pun Siripun, a Year 7 Science club enthusiast, tell us about one of our Science team’s projects. Congratulations to all the members of our Practical Science club who took part in this event.

Geography Worldwise Quiz - The rematch!

Geography.png

On Tuesday a team of 9 BIS Geographers took part in the 3rd annual Geography Worldwise Quiz. Stuart Elliot, Geography Teacher tells us about the event.

The competition was a table quiz format with BIS entering 3 teams comprising students from Year 8, 9 and 10.  The student’s Geographical knowledge was stretched to its limits through tough rounds such as Rivers of Asia and The Geography of Japan. Their abilities to think fast were also tested through a quick-fire round, where teams had to answer a lot of questions in a limited amount of time.

All teams performed admirably finishing second to a very strong team performance from BVIS in the overall school points score competition. BVIS also took the top two places in the individual tables completion, with our own team from BIS, Delta Force, coming a commendable third.

Congratulations to all team members who participated.

The Kagools

The Kagools, a multi-award winning physical comedy act from the UK, came back to work with our students again on Monday this week. They arrived fresh from the Adelaide fringe where they picked up Best Comedy Show 2017 with 'Tutti', a brand new show for this year.

Students at BIS were treated to a private performance of the show, which is bold, energetic and filled with audience participation. Stepping outside of your regular, audience comfort zone is highly recommended!

Secondary PTG Flea Market/Second Hand Sale

Our very successful flea market is coming up on Sunday 4 June from 9am to 12pm. If you are leaving Vietnam or keen to clear out items you no longer use, why not book a table at the flea market and sell your unwanted items? Tables cost VND200,000 each and can be booked by e-mailing the PTG at bisptgap2@gmail.com. Demand for tables is high so we suggest you book early. Only second hand items can be sold - no new items or food.

There will be lots of children’s toys, clothes, bags, small household items, adults and children’s books, etc. for sale on the day so please mark your calendar and come shopping!

Toothpaste Collection

Alois Luong (Year 10) and Jeremie Luong (12/13A) in conjunction with our Community Services department are organising a toothpaste collection. The NGO “Vietnam Health Clinic” will send 50 doctors to Quang Nam province to assist with medical checks for people in need. At the same time the NGO “ASSORV” will organize a field operation which will allow 2400 people to receive health checks in 8 days and will also distribute items such as toothbrushes, blankets, and mosquito nets.

As part of this initiative we will be collecting toothpaste from now until 26 May. Collection boxes are located on the first floor of the old building outside our Community Services office.

BIS AQUATHLON

Our well supported Aquathlon will take place on Saturday 3 June, a letter was sent out to parents this week. If you would like to take part in this exciting event, which incorporates a swim followed by a run, please return the reply slip attached to the letter for each parent or child competing and return it to the PE department or Secondary reception before Friday 26 May. As it is a house event for the first time this year, please ensure that your child is dressed up in their house colours to win points for their house

Under 14 Boys Volleyball SISAC Report 2017

Our team achieved a very satisfying third place in the Under 14 Boy’s Volleyball City Championships which took place at TIS recently. This is a step up from our fifth place finish in last year’s league. The captain’s player of the tournament goes to Rafael Navarro Palacios, Year 9, who played with consistency throughout the tournament. The coaches player of the tournament goes to Team Captain Adwaith Nair from Year 10.

My congratulations to an excellent team and their coach, Mr Jonny McLoughlin.

Schedule of School Fees 2017 - 2018

Dear Parents

The Schedule of Fees for the Academic Year 2017-2018 has now been published. A copy can be viewed and downloaded from the school web site.  Schedule of Fees 2017-2018

You will note that compared to last year there has been an average increase in the school Tuition Fees of 8%.

We have endeavoured to keep fee increase within a reasonable increment that will allow us to maintain the same high quality of educational provision in a growing school. We remain convinced that we represent good value for money and are comparable with similar schools in Vietnam and elsewhere in the region.
