The instinctive reaction, of a teacher on lunchtime duty in the canteen, upon seeing a Year 6 child skipping, is to remind them of their behavioural responsibilities. However, when that child happens to be a Year 6 girl called Kathy, whose skipping is inspired by the barely containable pride of one who has just achieved a great success on behalf of the school, the correct reaction is to understand and smile.

Last weekend the annual FOBISIA Primary Mathematics Competition was held at ABC International School, here in Ho Chi Minh City. 120 elite mathematicians from 30 international schools descended on the city from as far and wide as Korea, India, Singapore, Indonesia and many places in between.

In teams of four, the children competed over two days, undertaking a variety of complex mathematical challenges. Yoon Jun, Yule Un, Kathy and Quynh An, all from Year 6, represented BIS HCMC Junior Campus and got off to a flying start in the opening Maths Trail. This proved to be the first of many successful challenges and the children were rightly proud when, at the awards ceremony on Saturday, they were announced as being the overall winning team!

Huge congratulations are due to the children who represented the school with such distinction and competed with such determination. In addition, Yoon Jun finished an incredible third in the individual challenge.

Attention will soon turn to preparing the Year 5 children for the competition next year and as you can see from the photograph below, they are well on their way to emulating the success of their predecessors...
