Key Stage 3: Ages 11 - 14 years old

In Key Stage 3, students will study a wide range of academic subjects taught by enthusiastic, specialist teachers. They will also have the opportunity to engage in an extensive range of after school clubs and activities through our LEAP initiative.

General

Key Stage 3 refers to the curriculum covered by students in Years 7 - 9. Whilst pupils have experienced teaching by specialists in some areas of KS 2, all subjects in KS 3 are taught by specialists in the following fields:

Objectives

This is a three-year programme covering Years 7 - 9 in the Senior School. The objectives of this Key Stage are:

  • To ensure a smooth transition from whole class teaching in Key Stage 2 to specialist subject teaching at Key Stage 3.
  • To introduce students to a broader range of subjects based on those already introduced at Key Stage 2.
  • To pave the way for GCSE and IGCSE at Years 10 and 11 (Key Stage 4).
  • To extend the challenges offered and the demands to be faced as new knowledge and skills are introduced.
  • To encourage the development of learning skills and the ability to research, apply and interpret appropriate knowledge and information sources.
  • To continue emphasising the importance of basic skills in literacy, numeracy and science.
  • To improve the communication skills of all pupils, particularly through the use of media.
  • To advance the pupil's cultural sensitivity towards, and moral and ethical understanding of, our social and cultural milieu.
  • To encourage each pupil to contribute positively to the school community and to become an active participant in all areas of school life.
  • To ensure that physical, moral, social and emotional aspects of a pupil's development are encouraged and expanded, without detracting from the growth of each student's personal leisure interests.
  • To encourage each student to adopt a positive attitude to the care and protection of the environment.
