At The British School, Warsaw we are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all of our pupils to enable them to learn in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our school. If bullying does occur, all pupils should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. We are a TELLING school. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening is expected to tell the staff.
What is bullying?
The British School defines bullying as: Repeated verbal, physical or cyber attacks against a student or groups of students which could cause physical or psychological harm to the victims. It is usually conscious and wilful and consists of repeated acts of aggression and/or manipulation. It can take a number of forms, both physical and non-physical.
The school has a number of initiatives in place to prevent bullying:
- A quiet area, known as The Harbour, is set aside at break and lunch that the students know is a safe zone. This can be used by students. Permission to use this room will be required by Team Leaders.
- Boxes exist around the school where students can post information about being bullied or if they witness bullying taking place. These boxes are checked each day.
- An anti-bullying week campaign will be held near the beginning of each academic year. Tutor times and PSHE lessons will be used to highlight our anti-bullying policy and procedures. Appropriate resources will be distributed to all Form Tutors for use in tutor time.
The school recognises, however, that in any large organisation, no matter what steps are taken, bullying can still take place. We take allegations of bullying extremely seriously. To that effect we will address every incident and take immediate action. This will be in the form of logging the incident, discussions with students, parents and staff members involved and may result in isolation or expulsion. Students may also be required to enter the ‘Big Buddy Programme’ and will be mentored by staff.
