Scavenging In The Forest

Year 3 had a great start to the term with a walk up to the Dubravka Woods. The purpose of the walk was to kick start our Science and Themed Unit topics on "Rocks" and "Scavengers and Settlers".

As we walked up to the woods we looked at how rocks were used in different ways. This included in paths, the curb of the pavement and in walls. We looked at how the shape of the rocks have been changed by weathering through people walking over them and rain.

When we arrived in the woods the fun began. The children had to organise themselves into groups with children from the different classes in each group. Then they had a challenge. Only using natural materials that they found around them, they had to build a shelter for their group. The children worked incredibly well with each other.  After just over an hour each group had a produced a shelter. The children gained a lot of ideas from each other, and their team work was fantastic.

Once the children had eaten their snack, they then went to collect some soil samples to use back in school. The children were buzzing with excitement at the end of the day and it was a real pleasure to see them interact so brilliantly with each other.
