Year 5 in Zoom Museum Vienna

Currently at the Zoom Museum in Vienna there is a hands-on exhibition entitled ‘Plastic’. As Year 5 are studying materials in science, we decided to go and investigate en masse to see if we could learn anything about the most widely used material in the world today.
Did we enjoy ourselves? Yes. The children were able to partake in a number of fun activities. After putting on white lab coats, they saw how an infusion of heat into a test tube containing a mixture of plastic pellets could then be moulded into a shape of their choice, colours included. The children all looked like proper scientists.

Moreover, the children learnt lots about the chemical structure of plastic.  Words such as polymers, molecules and carbon atoms, all of which are essential components in in the synthetic construction of plastic, were soon comprehended.
Finally, we finished with a debate as we attempted to answer the question: Is plastic a good or a bad thing? As plastic is a non-bio degradable product, our oceans are continually being cluttered with plastic products. But could we live without it? And how could we as responsible humans reduce its polluting by-product? These questions we will continue to tackle in the next few weeks.
Thanks to the parent helpers.
