What a noise!

Year 4 have been learning about sounds in their Science lessons over the last couple of weeks. This has included learning about how sounds are made, how we hearing sounds and how we change the pitch of sounds. The children have carried out an investigation to find out which area of the school is the loudest.  Obviously this depends on the time of day, but one of the loudest was the music room. Su Hyeok concluded that this was "because there was a whole class banging drums".  They also carried out an investigation into which material would reduce sound levels the most. To be able to do this they had to plan carefully what they were going to do, thinking about what they were going to measure, how they were going to measure and which unit of measure they were going to use. They also had to think about how they were going to make it a fair test and how they were going to record their results. The children used data loggers to record sound levels in decibels (dB).

Linked with the Science, the children learnt how to use ICT to make digital music.  They experimented using two different online platforms: www.isleoftune.com and www.soundation.com.
With Isle of Tune, the children had to design an island. The different things that they put on the island made different sounds. When a car drives past them, the sound is made. The children were able to play around with pitch and speed.

With Soundation the children became mini-DJs, mixing together different electronic sounds to make a more musical sound. The children put together some great sound collections and were definitely enthused by the activity.
