Dissection at Biology - please read

Dear Parents,

On Wednesday morning 29th June 2016, KS3 students will get the opportunity to see a whole animal being dissected. The animal will be a pig. One of our parents, Mrs. Laursen, has kindly offered to come in to school to show students the internal organs of a pig and give them information about how they fit and work together. This is ideal for the KS3 students as in Biology this year they have all been learning about various organs and how they keep living things alive and functional. Year 7 focused on the role of the heart, lungs and reproductive system. Year 8 studied in more detail the digestive system as well as the circulatory and respiratory systems. Year 9 have been recapping on learning from Years 7 and 8 and have looked at the effects of lifestyle on the healthy functioning of body systems.

Due to limitations, it is difficult to be able to provide students with a more hands on experience when it comes to dissections. This is why this will not only be a unique but very enriching experience for them.

This is NOT a compulsory session. Any student who does not wish to watch / be in the room whilst the dissection is taking place will be able to work supervised in a separate science room.

Please inform either myself, their Form Tutor or Mr. Evans if you do not wish your child to be in the room.

All dissections will be carried out by Science staff and our visitor in the Science laboratory with specialist equipment. Students will not participate in the dissection; they will be observing only.
