Reception children took a trip to the Slovak National Gallery to learn how artists make their art work from wood. We saw a range of wooden sculptures, learnt that the wood for the sculptures comes from tree trunks, and that the artist have to use special tools to shape the wood into a sculpture. We also learnt that the wood can get eaten by wood worm and that some animals - like wood peckers, help the trees by eating the wood worm!
After exploring the gallery the children participated in a work shop using wooden lollipop sticks to make a special mouth organ. The children had great fun blowing through their mouth organ to make funny noises. They thought about what animal it sounded like, then the children drew pictures of the animals they had heard. Their mouth organs made a myriad of animal sounds including elephants, mice and many more!
