Year 5 Debate

On Friday 27th January, a formal debate was held by Year 5 in order round off their literacy unit and to dovetail with their Ancient Greek topic which they are studying at the moment.

5A began proceedings when two children stood up in front of their peers where each delivered an excellent speech, advocating the need for homework to be retained in school. This was counter argued by two more speeches of equal quality and delivery.  The question was then offered to the floor; all of the Year 5 children raised their hands and made pertinent points on the aforementioned issue. A vote was subsequently taken and yes, the majority of year 5 believe that homework should be banned forthwith.

Two other debates followed whose questions were: ‘Should junk food be banned?’ and ‘Should we spend money on space exploration?’

All the teachers agreed that the quality of speaking and listening was excellent; the children showed how intelligent and deep thinking they are. It was a lively and sometimes passionate debate which only lasted an hour, we all felt that we could have argued into our lunchtime, assembly and beyond.
