Chemistry in Action

Science is a discipline where you often learn best by doing things for yourself, and then applying them to new situations to solve a problem.

In our Year 10 IGCSE Chemistry course we are currently applying knowledge learned earlier in Term 1 and in Key Stage 3 to the problem of making salt crystals. In these two pictures you can see students using filtration to purify the salt solution they have made by neutralizing an acid with an insoluble base, and using evaporation to produce a saturated solution of the salt from which the salt crystals will grow.

Solving complex problems is one of the top ten “soft skills” that people will need in the future. So is collaboration and team work, and in our Chemistry class we get the chance to develop these skills while extending our knowledge and understanding of the power of Science. It is fun too!
