The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) at BISB
The Year 12 and 13 students at our IB curriculum school in Bratislava study for the IBDP. It’s a demanding but rewarding two-year course that blends academic study and outstanding teaching with one-of-a-kind opportunities for personal growth. Here, these include creative and sporting activities, community projects, and life-changing trips.
The IBDP is a truly international qualification. It’s followed by thousands of students worldwide who gain an understanding of, and respect for, different cultures. Recognised by the top universities across the world, taking the international Baccalaureate in Slovakia is particularly useful for students who want to study abroad.
The IBDP explained
Students study six subject groups: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts. Three of these subject groups are taken at higher level and three at standard level.
Your child will also need to complete the core programme – Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity and Service – to achieve their full Diploma.
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK): a course that explores critical thinking, giving students an understanding of how we learn.
- The Extended Essay: an in-depth independent research project focusing on a specific subject.
- Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS): a range of activities that develop our students’ creative skills and wellbeing, and support our local community.
Students need to get at least 24 points to pass the IBDP, including a minimum of 12 in higher level subjects and nine in standard level subjects. Completing the core programme scores three points.
Outstanding academic outcomes
We’re incredibly proud of our IBDP students’ outstanding results. An average points score of 34-35 puts our students among the highest achievers in Europe. Academic excellence means our students go to the world’s top universities, including Cambridge, the University of Hong Kong, MIT and Yonsei.
