Year 6A Class Teacher

After graduating from the University of Huddersfield in 1993, I worked for the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers – an organisation specialising in woodland management in the Peak District.  I completed my PGCE in 1995 at University College, Worcester and then took a post as Education and Outreach Officer at Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings, delivering education programmes for schools, colleges and universities.

Working with primary schools at the museum became a real passion so I jumped educational ship and embarked on the path I am still on – primary school education.  Initially working in Wolverhampton as a Year Three Teacher, I decided to look at opportunities further afield.  Firstly I worked in government schools in China, moving to the British International School of Shanghai, then to the International School of Brunei and finally The Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  I have held a variety of posts over this period including Curriculum Manager, Year Group Leader, Literacy Manager and member of Extended Primary Senior Management Team.

In my spare time I am a keen rock climber, cyclist and have a passion for football, playing whenever possible. I also have a great interest in music, playing the guitar in bands in the countries I have worked in and now hopefully in Bratislava!

Both myself and my family are delighted at becoming part of the BISB community.

What my students say about me:

‘You’re really open-minded and you have a sense of humour that I really like.’

‘He is always positive, kind and hardworking.’

‘Full of useful information and interesting.’

‘Studying with you has been fun as in everyone enjoys it.’

‘Mr Thorpe is kind and understanding, he helps us when we have problems.’

I believe High Performance Learning really puts the child at the centre of teaching and learning by providing a stimulating, differentiated environment that builds confidence within pupils and challenges them appropriately.  I strongly feel that this approach really helps develop children academically, socially and personally.
