JOB TITLE

Learning Support Teacher

JOB PURPOSE

To provide appropriate support for referred students through in-class support or stimulating withdrawal lessons that provide students with the opportunities to learn and maximise attainment.

Principal, Secondary Headteacher and Primary Headteacher

MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE

Student attainment and assessment

  • Responsible for the Individual Education Plan (IEP) process including: collation of information and assessment data, collaboration with key stakeholders (students, teachers and parents/ caregivers), timely sharing of relevant information and regular review of IEP targets.
  • Where relevant, the Learning Support teacher is responsible for coordinating referrals to external agencies (Educational Psychologists, Speech Language Therapists).

 

Students meet IEP targets.

 

Student attainment meets standardised levels of achievement in accordance with the broader curriculum.

 

Involvement of key stakeholders including students, teachers, parents/ caregivers and external agencies.

Teaching

  • Providing in-class support for individuals/ groups of students within the classroom context. This may involve adaption of activities/ resources, use of learning aides/ assistive technologies and diversifying teaching approaches.
  • Responsible for the planning, preparation and delivery of withdrawal lessons to provide appropriate support for specific targets (where in-class support is inappropriate).
  • The role may include team teaching and/or planning specific units of study for the use of classroom teachers to meet social, emotional or behavioural targets of referred students within the mainstream classroom.

Administration and development:

  • Contributing to the wider school community through: internal and external CPD; staff meetings; assemblies; school trips; attending sporting events; annual requisition orders; writing HUB articles; offering ECAs; supervision of students during breaks; and maintaining good quality displays in classrooms and public areas. Contributions may extend to any other reasonable task assigned by the Principal or head of section and may include invigilating exams.
  • Involvement in special events, such as, festivals, house events, international week, book week and assemblies.
  • Proactive responses to health and safety risks and child protection issues, including following the appropriate procedures and reporting concerns to relevant personnel.

 

 

Play an active role in the wider school community.

 

Safeguarding procedures are observed to ensure the school operates in a safe and organised manner.

Qualifications/Training

  • Degree plus teaching qualification

Essential

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities; or
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities; or
  • Masters of Education (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities)

Desirable

Experience / Knowledge

  • Thorough understanding and working knowledge of the IEP process, including referral and observation procedures.

  • Experience working with students with a range of educational needs, especially Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Speech Language Processing needs.

  • Demonstrates excellent classroom practice including the planning, preparation and delivery of appropriate, timely, individualised support.

Hold a current Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure or equivalent for countries lived in outside of the UK.
