SMIC Model United Nations (SMICMUN II) Conference

On Saturday 31st October, 7 students including myself had the privilege of attending the 2nd Annual Session of the SMICMUN Security Council. This year’s theme was the ‘Right to Rule’, and the three topics were: Securing Libya; Stabilizing Yemen and Establishing an Independent Kurdistan.

Marcel Natter, Amanda Cheng, Eunice Lee, Benedicte Vestrum and Cindy Son were involved as delegates. They spent their day in the three committee rooms debating their assigned topics, raising points of order and reaching compromises with their fellow delegates. Kiesha-Marie Chong and I were given the great opportunity to chair two of the three councils.

All delegates were well prepared for the conference, having undertaken a substantial amount of research beforehand. All our delegates were eagerly involved in the discussions which led to successful outcomes with, for example, two out of two resolutions passing in the committee discussing Yemen.

It was inspirational to meet so many students willing to actively engage in international issues with creativity, open-mindedness and determination. I hope more students of our school will see the value of MUN and join to gain this intriguing experience in the future.
