Minecraft in School?

Why are children at NAIS playing Minecraft in school?

From the moment we wake up and check the news, to setting our alarms before we go to sleep, it is clear that we live in a world truly surrounded by technology. So, we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of children are learning computer science, and even fewer are studying it than a decade ago.

That’s why, during Computer Science Education Week, Primary students at NAIS Pudong have been taking part in largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code.  Like 100 million other children around the world, our students have been encouraged to spend an hour increasing their computer science skills through a range of fun and interesting self-guided tutorials.

Once students have used coding blocks and java script to make characters (from popular films such as Minecraft, Frozen and Star Wars) complete tasks. The children can see what they create right before their eyes, giving them the empowerment to keep going.

It has certainly been a fun week of coding for the students, but also a very valuable learning experience as well.
