The Iceland Trip Cometh…

The days are counting down towards what must be one of the most exciting trips of the year here at BISS Pudong! On Friday, early in the morning, 27 very excited students from Years 8 to 11, plus three equally excited staff, will be heading for Pudong Airport and a BA flight to London which marks the start of a week long adventure in Iceland!

This is a Geography trip which focus on the sheer awe and wonder of our amazing planet and allows students to learn Geography in the best possible way – by getting up close and personal with some of the world’s most inspiring and remarkable locations.

Iceland is one of the finest places in the world to visit on a Geography trip. As an island formed entirely by volcanic activity at the boundary between the North American plate and the Eurasian plate, it offers a range of mind-blowing sites. While there, we will see volcanoes, lava flows, beaches made entirely of ash. We will see the aftermath of the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption and learn about what happened (and maybe learn how to say it!). We will visit the point where the two plates are moving apart and be able to say that we have stood on the bridge between the continents. We will visit geysers and mud volcanoes and watch them in action. Also on the agenda are frozen waterfalls, huge canyons and other-worldly formations.

Iceland is a country of glaciers and our intrepid team will go on a walk on the surface of one glacier and have a monster 8WD off-road experience to the snout of another. We will explore lava tube caves and swim in thermal pools, luxuriating in the warm water as the snow falls around us.

One particularly exciting aspect of the trip is the mix of ages: this represents a fantastic opportunity for students across Upper and Middle Schools to work together and get to know each other as friends and colleagues.

We will be blogging our adventures and I hope that many of you will follow, and even comment on, what we get up to. We will be using tumblr and the link is below!
