Poetry with a Purpose

Y6 students were set the challenge at the beginning of this week of crafting a poem around the subject of Our Environment.

Students had 3 days in which to craft and up-level their writing. They were then given the task of practicing it for a performance within their classes.

The top 3 from each were then chosen for the poetry grand slam final – the judging criteria of which was content/structure, emotive language and performance. The finalists were:

Shreyas Tiwari – Our Mother (Qi)
Tonya Manzenko – Earth’s Opinion (Dao)
Emma Handoko – Beware, mother’s Dying(Qi)
Romane Castel – Help! Help! Help Our Environment! (Dao)
Amanda Yong- Dark and Light (De)
Sergio Serrano Martin – Our environment (Qi)
Alex Ramos Lopez – Trees (Dao)
Charlotte Dingli – Voice of a Once Green Tree (Qi)
Marguerite Girard – Footprints (De)
Minato Kuba – Future World, Our Choice (Qi)
Abe Zakhem- Help Me (De)
Lia Wilson- Rainforest (Qi)

Our judges (Mrs Wallace, Mrs Howard, Mrs Howell and Mrs Barlow) had an extremely tough task ahead of them when deciding on the winners as the standard of writing across the year group was truly outstanding. Anyone could have been the winner. The students performed with assurance, confidence and their words really struck a note with the audience.

However, a decision had to be made and after spending some time deliberating the judges were:

3rd place Romane Castel
2nd place Minato Kuba
1st place Emma Handako.

Congratulations to all the finalists and watch out for our next creative house competition which is to write a short story for our Global Classroom competition.
